Here are some common questions I get from adult piano students.

1. Am I too old to learn the piano?

The answer is no. I have taught many students of all ages and this is definitely not a barrier to learning to play the piano. The difference with children and most adults is that an adult will be much more critical of themselves.

2. I'm not very musical - will I still be able to learn to play the piano?

Yes absolutely. I've not had one student who couldn't play a piece of music after a few weeks. You need to practice of course! It's like learning anything - dedication and enthusiasm will ensure faster progress. I believe that if everyone played a musical instrument the world would be a better place! Every person has music in them.

3. Why do I need a teacher when I can use a book or follow an online courses on the internet?

You can still get to a high standard without a teacher but there are benefits to having a good one:

a) You get instant feedback. You will learn at a faster rate than by yourself because you will get instant feedback on how to make your playing the best it can be, avoiding or correcting bad habits.

b) Help you deal with setbacks. If you feel like you have hit a brick wall with your playing or feel frustrated with your lack of progress you will be encouraged and shown ways to overcome any problems you have.

c) Information is given to you at the right time. With so much information out there it can become rather overwhelming to know what to do next if you are learning the piano without a teacher. A good teacher will know what to give the student next with regard to pieces, exercises etc.
